Spouses of ADEC

Being the spouse of an ADEC expat can be a perplexing process. They continue to thrive in a field they adore, and we are asked to leave behind our careers to join the journey. When my husband and I first fell in love he made the following statement, “Don’t worry about anything, I got you!” There was something about his particular tone and his eyes that allowed my wall to slowly come down and to wholeheartedly believe him. That being said 12 hours after giving birth to our daughter he received the email to travel to New York the following week for his final interview. Whoa…wait one second, I just delivered a baby! I had to remind myself that throughout our lives I knew my husband made every decision for our family through the wisdom of God, thus there was no need to stress.

After receiving the awesome news to prepare for an adventure in Abu Dhabi we were bursting with excitement. Then the reality of the move hit home. What about my career in Atlanta? Will I find my dream job in Abu Dhabi? How will I find this job without any networking connections in Abu Dhabi? While I enjoy being a stay at home mom in the interim, my desire is to focus on elevating my career in business.

After some time reflecting, I decided to utilize the faith I have in my husband and his ADEC opportunity as a stepping-stone for my career. This opportunity should allow the spouses to not only focus on obtaining a job, but rather to make their dreams a reality. Whether starting a business, working in corporate, or balancing both is completely up to you. Whatever vision God has displayed upon you can be achieved anywhere.

1. Abu Dhabi Women’s Group: A great group to socialize and network about the ins/outs of Abu Dhabi. Anything from referred physicians, restaurants, and activities can be found here.

2. California-Abu Dhabi Connections: They meet for coffee and plan family activities. Their purpose is to build friendships and support one another.

3. Real Housewives of Abu Dhabi: A community of single or married women comprised of mothers, entrepreneurs & professionals.

Networking Groups

1. American Women Network of Abu Dhabi: An informal group of American women living and working in Abu Dhabi. They offer coffee meet-ups and other social activities. http://www.awnabudhabi.com/

If David can wait 20 years......

to become king, then surely I can wait a few more days/weeks for my transition (2 Samuel 2:1-5:5). As many of my colleagues prepare to fly out tomorrow, I will still be in Mobile, Alabama not quite sure of my own departure date. Now, I don't mean that to sound pessimistic at all. I read the other day that perspective/outlook/attitude all rest in how you tell the (your) story. While I would be ecstatic to be flying out tomorrow, where I am currently is a great deal better than where I could be! You see, if I were still in Atlanta, today would be the first day back for teachers...signaling the start of a new school year. I know the excitement of this day and I know the anxiousness of the unknown. I ALSO know the pressure of trying to improve student achievement, staff efficacy, teaching and learning, and the culture and climate of an entire school community. Raising student and teacher outcomes and expectations is a GRIND! Don't get me wrong...there is a part of me that is sad today, but overall, I would MUCH rather be right here, right now waiting than heading back into that grind. At the same time, I am grateful for the GRIND because it has prepared me for this opportunity. I am also appreciative to ALL the teachers who enter back into this GRIND today! I will keep them uplifted continually....

For those that don't know, there are mainly two opportunities that you have to work with ADEC (Abu Dhabi Educational Council). You can work as a teacher or administrator. There are a few others,  but those are the two main positions. Both have perks and are worth exploring if you are interested. For teachers, the process, once hired, is pretty much blind. Other than teachers knowing their salary, they have no idea which of the three regions they will be placed in AND what school they will placed in. Unlike, administrators, we are told our regional placements and salary, but still are not made aware of which school. Well.....I had been placed in Al Ain, which is about an hour from Dubai and about and hour and a half from Abu Dhabi. Al Ain is considered the suburbs and more family oriented. It was also designed to be more of a "green space". Many of the WONDERFUL administrators that I have come to know and enjoy at this point, have been placed in Al Ain. Also, a good friend of mine from Atlanta was also placed in Al Ain. I say all of this to say that Al Ain was going to be a good fit for my family....however, it wasn't my first choice. Deep down, I really wanted to be in Abu Dhabi......

My wife Sherrica (who needs to blog more:), has her MBA in Marketing and even though she is an incredible mother....she really wants to work outside of the home. We both have a vision for what we want and where we want to be in 5 years and her ability to work would accelerate the fulfillment of our family goals. With that, my concern was that her professional opportunities would be limited in Al Ain, and I wasn't comfortable with her having to commute anywhere from an hour to an hour and a half to secure something in her field.

But a funny thing happened while waiting! Yesterday, while laying across the bed watching netflix (I'm currently watching every season from The Office), I noticed an email from my recruiter. I initially thought it was an update on my departure date, BUT IT WASN'T!!!! I read the email and then I read it again..and then I read it again. It was an email informing me that my regional placement had been changed from Al Ain to ABU DHABI!!!!!! YEEEEEESSSSSS!!!!!! This is exactly what Sherrica and I wanted and makes the waiting worth it! While I am excited for the opportunity, this gives me more patience to wait. The housing opportunities are much more vast and in my opinion "wonderful" as Abu Dhabi is more like the city (New York City) with high rises and is more Sherrica's speed:) LOL

So in my waiting, God blessed me. Two verses come to mind:

  1. Ephesians 3:20 Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us. 
  2. 2 Corinthians 9:8 And God is able to bless you abundantly, so that in all things at all times, having all you need, you will abound in every good work. 
While I was praying for a little thing, God was blessing me with a BIG thing that would allow the vision that he has given me for my life and the life of my family to be realized. Like Steve Harvey said..."All I gotta do is not mess it up!"

So if you have read some of my earlier posts, you know that there is no one that has lauded over Facebook more than I. Facebook has allowed me to connect with some amazing people and begin to build what I hope are some genuine friendships! However, recently I have found myself visiting some of the pages that are dedicated to those who are involved in this transition to UAE. I write this blog because there are two “mindsets” that have bothered me about what I have seen lately. My hope is that future or even current folk will read this and begin to govern themselves accordingly.

So what is it that I am speaking of…..well recently that place (Facebook) that many individuals, including myself, turned to for support, knowledge, humor, and collegiality has turned a bit sour. Now don’t get me wrong, there are FAR more positive people and well-intentioned folk than there are negative, but when it turns bad….it turns BAD! So the first mindset that bothers me are those individuals who are not there under the umbrella of positivity, reassurance, truthfulness, collegiality, and support. Yes, I have seen the same question posted several times…HELL, I might have even asked a question that has been answered 23 times before. However, you never know when the person joined the “group” and if they are asking, it means they genuinely want to know. It boggles my mind why some people would respond negatively to someone that is just asking an innocent question. And I “betcha” that these could potentially be the same folk, who wonder why they have such a hard time adjusting when their feet finally hit the sand. What they affectionately call the “sandbox” will eventually turn into the “hotbox!!!”



And while I think there is nothing worse than folk that sit behind a computer screen and say whatever they want, however they want, the next “mindset” that bothers me is those that feel like they can “regulate” other grown people by deleting them from groups. Let’s face it, I don’t like the negative voices either, however, this is Facebook and to a certain degree, what’s makes social media the forum that it is, is the opportunity to share opposing views and/or attitudes no matter how distasteful. I don’t like to play God and don’t care for others who feel like they can wield a sword of dictatorship.  If you read something that you don’t’ agree with, I have some advice for you….move on! Don’t get hung up on the ignorance or vitriol nastiness that comes from some people. Again, there are far more good folk than there is the other. Yes, on your personal page you have the freedom to do as you please when it comes to whom you accept, decline, friend, or unfriend. BUT in an open forum, come one come all. As grown ups, we should have developed the skills to be able to deal with discourse, disagreements, and disrespect. I don’t need anyone “resolving my interpersonal conflicts. I would hope that by the time anyone made this huge decision, they also would have managed to develop conflict resolution skills, a sense of patience, a positive temperament, and the ability to self regulate especially when it comes to what you type on a social media site. If not, they are ALREADY in trouble and will find much more of it when they arrive.

As a self described “lover of human dynamics”, I have a theory of why what was once beautiful has become ugly at times and the answer is simple. People have nothing else to do!!!! Think about it….most of the people are teachers and would be spending their days traveling, reading, teaching summer school, or doing nothing.at all at their own discretion. But because no one knows when he or she is leaving, everyone is holding on to his or her finances for the most part. All many can think about at this point is the UAE! Everything you have done from saving, packing, buying, reading, and moving out in some cases have ALL revolved around this dream of the UAE. “Some”, and I doubt they will admit it, have become possessed by this move and overly consumed. So much so that some have begun to turn on one another and even when those well-intentioned folk have something positive to say that “some might not like”, they are threatened with excommunication! Really???

Just like the problem is simple, the answer is even simpler. GO FIND YO ARSE SOMETHING TO DO!!!  Yes, you may not be able to travel or spend like you normally would but this is the time to be creative. If you live in a major city, I am sure there are a number of free things to do. Enjoy your family that you will not see for long stretches of time, go take some classes at the Apple store, do like my wife did and take a cake decorating class, even though she doesn’t bake. LOL It doesn’t matter what you do, just do something and leave Facebook alone for a while. No one is going anywhere anytime soon, and there is absolutely nothing new on Facebook. Stop checking your email….NEWSFLASH…AIN’T NOTHING THERE!!! Stop trying to figure out a departure date and stop listening to folk who know probably less than you do!

We will all be there soon enough and I am sure that each and everyone of us at one point or another will think back to a time where we could have done something with someone while we were still here.

So you can either drive yourself crazy waiting on something that you have absolutely no control over…OR..you can LIVE while waiting. I choose to live and if you need me, I’ll be at the beach with my kids…..its FREE!!!! LOL

Atlanta....it's been real! #deuces


Well, I can't speak for Sherrica, but then again, I probably can. When I moved to Atlanta 2 years ago, you couldn't tell me nothing! Big city, things to do, closer to home, great job, more money, and the women (I was single at the time)!!!! I would have never guessed that two years later I would be married with a new baby, packing for Abu Dhabi. Ain't GOD Good!

While I present to most as a modern, intelligent, articulate, well traveled man....at the core of me is just a country boy from Alabama. I AIN'T BEEN NOWHERE:) Seriously, you don't believe me...

L.A.- No
Vegas- No
Chicago- No
Miami- No
Texas- Barely
New York- only for my ADEC interview
Boston- Yes...(finally one place)
Out of the country- NO....unless you count that cheap ass Carnival Cruise by the Bahamas because we weren't there long enough to say I went to the Bahamas.

Two years ago, I hadn't even heard of Abu Dhabi, let alone working there. Had I, I probably would have chosen to go then, but EVERYTHING happens for a reason and had I gone, I would have been the picture of what not to do. Where I was mentally two years ago, I would have BALLED OUT. Yacht parties every weekend, shopping, shopping, shopping, probably driving a new Range, living in a villa much bigger than what I would need....did I mention shopping. 

Thank God for maturation, a greater sense of purpose, a WIFE (Proverbs 18:22), and a renewed commitment to my financial security, but more importantly, the goal of securing my family's financial future.

I was attracted to Atlanta two years ago to help with the renaissance of Atlanta Public Schools. For those that do not know, APS was part of one of the largest, if not largest, documented systemic epidemic of cheating. THOUSANDS of children were impacted and continue to be impacted as they were "literally" passed along year after year and given passing test scores...well, actually teachers changed the students answers so that children would pass state end of year test. I needed a change and the idea of joining with other new principals to serve students and communities that had been impacted was, "at the time", my DREAM JOB! I won't bore you with the details, but I leave Atlanta with APS in my prayers. Nearly 4 years after this tragedy, APS is still trying to pull itself off the mat from the blow of the cheating scandal. I pray for APS because at the core of all school systems are the children. What will need to happen, but most certainly won't happen, is that ALL the brilliant people in APS, and I do honestly mean BRILLIANT, will have to talk about the main thing and not about the "next thing". With that, I truly wish this school system, more so any other that I have worked for, GOD's SPEED and GUIDANCE!

The past three days have had me asking, how in the "cotton picking" world did my ancestors do it? It has been hot!!!! Yes, I had my 13 year old to help me, but if you have kids that age, you already know how that went. I will give him his props, he helped and I couldn't have done it without him, but I felt like a cowboy trying to break a young stallion:) I thought that by giving away all the big things that loading a truck with the little things would be easy. I didn't take into account the daily 95 degree heat, along with the 14 steps that had to be navigated about 75 times. Talk about a work out!!! And while we gave away most things, I only had one simple request when those people came to pick items up...bring MUSCLE! In one instance I gave away two bedroom sets, with dressers, beds, side tables, mattresses...you get the idea. The person who I gave it too, while I love to death, she brought a U-haul and her 65 year old retired husband as the MUSCLE! Are you f$%^ing kidding me? So, there I was, doing what I did not want or intend on doing which was lifting and carrying, very slowly I might add, furniture up and down stairs.....it didn't help that after her husband fell with the mattress on top of him, things went progressively slower. I STILL lover her and I am appreciative that he gutted it out, because he had no idea what his wife had set him up for.....even though renting a large U-haul might have given most others a small clue:) LOL

After another three days of packing, we made our SLOW way to Alabama and we will be here for the rest of the summer until I leave. Surprisingly I got an email from my recruiter yesterday telling me to be patient. If she only knew, I still a tremendous amount of work to do. I have made a list using the Wunderlist app. It's the best! Some of the things still left to do are:


  • purchase luggage
  • do one final sort of clothes
  • purchase a VPN
  • Make copies of all my paperwork
  • Do a Will
  • Register my car in Alabama
  • Figure out the cellphone "thingy"


A funny thing has happened over the past month or so. Initially, I wanted to board a plane and leave immediately. I was so excited...maybe too excited because I was spending all the free time I had reading blogs and on every FB group associated with Abu Dhabi there was. At one point, there were at least 15. I have since cut back to about 10:) The point is, my wife became extremely angry at me and told me that I was killing "the mood" for her. I was sooooo excited about what would occur in...who knows when (you know how that Golden ticket thing works) that I wasn't living in the present. I had to reflect on my wife's perspective and while I am still excited to go, over the past month I have come to a place of peace about not caring really when I leave. I find myself more excited about my vacation to Orlando, or stressing about where to take my 5 year old fishing since that is ALL he keeps asking me for the past week. Why am I stressing, because the trip means nothing if we don't catch fish and while I am not a novice at fishing, I am certainly not an expert. I am excited to have the time to work out and then do nothing! Abu Dhabi is not going anywhere and I will get there when I get there. Don't get me wrong, I don't want to be in the last group, but living in the moment feels a lot better than worrying about or anticipating the "unknown" future.

I knew something had shifted about a week ago when I was sorting through my suits. All of a sudden, I was like, why am I taking all this STUFF! This is about an experience, financial freedom, travel, and family! I don't need 30 suits to accomplish any of this! I found myself placing suits and shirts and ties in a Goodwill bag. Mind you, some of this STUFF, I have never worn before, but how many DAMN blue shirts do I need? All of this STUFF was a symbol of gluttony and money wasted! It was a symbol of everything, I didn't want this opportunity to be!

STUFF= Something(s) That Undermines Family Fun. How much STUFF are you holding on too? How much STUFF is in the way of you having an incredible life with your family? How much STUFF is holding you down or drowning you financially? Let the STUFF go...Hell, you can't take it with you anyway and with this opportunity, I "literally" cannot take ALL THIS STUFF with me!

I'll end this post thinking about the horrific acts that occurred this week in Charleston, South Carolina, a state by the way that still flies the Confederate Flag as a symbol of pride. My prayers are for the families of the victims, the Charleston community, and the world (U.S) we live in.  I still get asked the same questions about how safe is it "over there", and I am beginning to hate the phrase, "You be safe over there!" I want to respond that "It's safer there than it is here or I'll try to be as as safe there as I am here." And I am sure there are others, who behind my back, speak negatively about my leaving as well with regards to safety. For all those who worry about my safety and the safety of my family President Obama, this week unfortunately, said it best:
I'll just drop the mic and walk off now and let you digest the reality of what your "safe" truly is/means....

The Invisible Man


Yesterday another reality "boulder" was dropped on me to make me realize that this experience is really about to happen. I could go on about how "un-professional" my district was in not creating a time and space for a more formal introduction, but why waste my time. In the spirit of Kevin Hart...Let Me Explain...At about 11:00 a.m., my secretary walked into my office and stated that I had a guest. Let's call him "Mr. New". I walk out of my office and while shaking Mr. New's hands, he introduces himself as the new principal. Again, thanks to the district and it's leadership for emailing me, calling me, or texting me. Hell, they could have sent a pigeon or something.... THIS was how I found out who would be replacing me.....To be honest, I took it as a slap in the face. As this kids say...I just might be in my feelings though:) BUT IT IS WHAT IT IS!

While sitting and chatting, it was sort of surreal that I was no longer going to be the principal. I kind of felt like a mother bear wanting to protect her child. There was a feeling that I did not want to turn my "baby" over to someone else. I guess I know what mother's feel like the first time they drop their children off to day care. Realistically, I know that the comparison is not the same, but you get my drift! I actually think that this is a sign that I need to finally let go of the present so that I can fully appreciate what is ahead of me. I know for some, it is easy to just mentally let go and become excited about this move..and don't get me wrong, I am excited as well! However, it feels funny to go to work everyday and not be engaged in "the work". I feel like the invisible man now. Oh well, I guess this is my new normal, or at least it will be for the next two weeks. I guess it could be worse:) LOL

We have 15 more days until Sherrica and I move out. Time is flying. The following few weeks are going to be a logistical dance somewhat of the Tango to make sure that it all comes together. Packing, moving, a quick trip to Virginia, selling items, donating to Goodwill. I'm already mentally tired already! In just two more weeks, we will be out of our Atlanta home and back in the great state of Alabama:) #WAR EAGLE

With the move to Alabama also comes the realization that I will not see my Atlanta crew anymore until we are all in Abu Dhabi. This journey has been amazing to take with people who are just as excited, and wide-eyed as I am. Their support and friendship has been AMAZING! My hope is that I have been to them what they have been to me throughout this experience and WAITING:) It is also my prayer that the reasons that each of us chose to take this incredible leap of faith, will be the same reasons that keep us buoyed to not only endure, thrive beyond the culture shock, challenges, frustrations, heat, and uncertainty that we will NO DOUBT have to persevere through when we arrive.

This week a great article was published. While it is written from the perspective of a single mom living in Abu Dhabi, many of the insights that are shared, many of us can easily identify with. It was inspiring and I hope you enjoy it or are able to pass it along to someone who may be struggling with questions such as:

Function Meets Fashion



As a new mommy I am slowly morphing into a lifestyle of convenience where function meets fashion. My husband and I plan to travel separately due to my sister’s wedding in late August.  The thought of traveling by myself with a 6 month old has given me sporadic thoughts of anxiety. I plan to make this experience a little smoother by ensuring that I have all of my essentials in a hands-free bag. I suspect a diaper bag backpack would do the trick; because I could toss it on my back without having to worry about leaving it anywhere and it would also keep my hands free to care for my little princess.


I wrote down a list of items I would need to place in my backpack. They include:
§  8-10 diapers
§  Wipes
§  Baby snacks
§  Baby Headphones
§  Breastfeeding cover
§  Small blanket
§  2-3 little toys
§  3 changes of clothes for baby + 1 shirt for me (My baby likes to spit up)
§  Iphone
§  Ipad or MacBook
§  Travel toiletries (deodorant, toothbrush, toothpaste)
§  Baby medications
